Usually, doctor use the term “risk factor” for any anything which increases the chance of getting those diseases. For example smoking increases the risk of lung cancer so smoking is the risk factor

Family History of Breast Cancer

Genetics and family history ate the two important factors for Breast cancer. Doctor consider that a young women having a family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer / or genetic mutations associated with breast cancer is considered to be a High risk candidate for breast cancer.


Strong family history of Breast or ovarian cancer can be a strong indication for hereditary breast cancer. Its means two or more relative with breast or ovarian cancer increase the risk of breast cancer.

Genetic Mutations

The most common cause of hereditary breast cancer is Mutations to the BRCA1 and BRCA2. Its normally help to control cell division. The risk for Breast cancer increases with the mutation in either BRCA1 or 2. Even other genetic mutations also increase the risk of Breast or ovarian cancer, but are less common as they are not as risky as much as BRCA1 and 2.
Getting genetic testing or genetic counseling help you to understand the risk factors. It will help you or make more you informed about the risk factor and decisions about your health, whether you are at high risk or already have breast cancer.
If your doctor says that you are at high risk for hereditary breast cancer then also you have options to protect your self

Options include:
Mammogram test
Medicine or chemoprevention
Preventive or prophylactic surgery to remove breasts and/or ovaries
Surveillance with MRI or ultrasound to detect breast cancer early

 In case you already have breast cancer and the test indicates a hereditary mutation, this information can still inform and improve your healthcare decisions and treatment. The test result also helps your relatives or family members in understanding their risk.
